ABTS 2022: Day 2 Recap, September 14, 2022 EDT

Day 2 was an exciting day full of learning workshops, site showcases, FireSite discussions, networking opportunities and more! General sessions began with an interactive learning session focused on successful collaboration with J&J Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), led by BTE’s self-sustaining Bracknell, United Kingdom site. During this session, the BTE family were able to learn about some of J&J’s spectacular ERGs and the critical role they play in leading Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) initiatives and fostering the development of BTE youth and programming elements. This session was followed by FireSite chats- breakout discussions specific to program year. Strategic Planning, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 and sustaining sites each had their own space to share successes, challenges, and learn from one another.

A remarkable Keynote was presented by Dr. Christina Norris-Watts, J&J’s Head of Assessment and People Practices, and Michael Ehret, J&J’s Head of Global Talent Management. During this outstanding session, J&J’s global talent management leaders took a deep-dive exploring critical capabilities employers are looking for, as well as the gaps they are finding in current research as it relates to entry-level employees. The discussion prompted an enriching Q&A that explored ways in which BTE sites can help develop BTE youth in these areas, as well as create content and resources to support them- truly inspiring!

Touching upon the theme of this year’s ABTS, “Extending Reach, Driving Impact”, ABTS attendees participated in a roundtable discussion with veteran BTE Champions and Site Coordinators who have successfully sustained their global BTE programs beyond the pilot- some sites even sustaining for nearly 17 years! These BTE leaders explored the various roads to sustainability and what innovations are needed to maintain a successful sustained program. A review of strategic partnerships, resources, and model iterations were explored. The final learning session of the day included a 5x5x5 Rapid Resources & Innovation session, which explored key College & Career Readiness and STEM2D resources. These resources included the new DE&I content “Becoming Champions for Change”, the Career Awareness eModules that lead to a digital badge credential for both youth and Navigators, a hands-on interactive STEM2D experiment, as well as an innovative Robotics Education opportunity available to all global BTE sites. A variety of BTE Site Exhibits were also held by BTE and community partners representing sites from High Wycombe, United Kingdom; Tswelopele, South Africa; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Puebla Mexico; and Singapore.
