BTE Student Stories
BTE-Santa Ana is March 2018’s Site Spotlight! Some highlights of the site include:
Career Symposium
In October, Santa Ana BTE students attended a Career Symposium at Biosense Webster in Irwindale, California. To start the day, a panel of Johnson & Johnson professionals shared about their own educational and professional journeys. Students attended 4 different rotations focused on the various stages of medical device development. Students learned how doctors utilize therapeutic catheter during catheter ablations and were even able to practice their surgical skills on a chicken breast. They also experienced a clean room to review manufacturing and quality control. The message for the day was “The Impossible in Possible!”
CSU Long Beach Campus Visit
In November 2017, BTE-Santa Ana visited California State University Long Beach. CSULB is seventeen miles away from Santa Ana High School and a top choice for students. BTE participants toured the campus, attended an admissions presentation, and visited the dorms. Students learned about the different majors offered at CSULB and the various opportunities to get involved on campus. At the end of the day, students also enjoyed the campus dining options. This was their second Cal State campus, and their third followed in April 2018 with a visit to California State University Polytechnic, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona).
National Academy of engineering
In February 2018, Santa Ana BTE participants received a special invitation from the National Academy of Engineers (NAE) to attend their Annual Meeting at the Beckman Center in Irvine, Ca. Engineers presented on different engineering topics. Students heard talks about helicopters on Mars from representatives from the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab, robots as medical devices, automated vehicles, water control, and the James Webb Space Telescope. BTE participants also networked with engineers in different fields and learned more about career options. This was their second time participating in the annual conference and they look forward to being invited in 2019!
SAT Prep Course
As high school juniors, Santa Ana BTE students were preparing for the college application process in March 2018. They enrolled in challenging academic courses and participated in a wide array of co-curricular activities. Additionally, BTE students participated in a SAT prep course. Offered by UC Irvine’s Division of Continuing Education, 30 BTE students enrolled in the course. The course is was held over 5 Saturday sessions to get students in fighting shape for this very important test.
