Andrew P. Hill High School in San Jose, California academically prepares students for the rigorous demands of the 21st century through its magnet programs. Within the Health/Medical Academic Program, over 725 students participate in six career pathways, including direct patient care, sports medicine and rehabilitation, hospital administration, medical research, biotechnology, and veterinary medicine. Through the San Jose Bridge to Employment (BTE) partnership, 100 students participated in the Johnson & Johnson Nursing Academy. The BTE curriculum prepared students to enter a post secondary institution or the health care workforce and included high school courses in nursing and physiology, as well as college instruction in nursing. Students taking part in the program participated in job shadowing and various work experiences. ALZA Corporation, a local Johnson & Johnson operating company, provided students and teachers with industry-related health care exploration. ALZA and its nurses in occupational health, environmental health and safety, and veterinary and clinical research, participated in guest lectures and provided job shadowing opportunities for both students and teachers. For example, students in their sophomore year took field trips to medical facilities and juniors participated in a three-day tour of five colleges that have a focus in nursing, medicine, veterinary medicine, and dentistry. In addition, students took part in a summer nursing and health sciences boot camp which allowed them the opportunity to explore new activities and knowledge areas, and provided them with academic support.
