Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development partnered with Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) and Franklin Township Public Schools to provide an “early college” program to 35 students (ninth-graders in the 2010-2011 school year).
The BTE-Franklin Township, New Jersey program featured an annual two-week summer research experience and weekly, after-school sessions that stressed academic excellence, work-based learning opportunities, and the development of transferrable, life-long skills. Students also completed several hands-on, applied science projects that were presented at the end of the school year. Other academic support activities that occurred during weekly after-school sessions included:
- A learning styles inventory, which gave guidance and recommends study-skills techniques based on each student’s learning style.
- Tutoring for students that needed assistance with homework, projects, and exam preparation.
- Academic advising sessions where students focused on goal setting, time management, and academic/college planning.
