Silicon Valley, California

Grant Period: 2005 - 2009

Community Initiative

Building on a highly successful BTE program in Milpitas, California, the BTE-Silicon Valley program provided opportunities and career exploration in the biotechnology and health care industry to select students throughout the South Bay area of Northern California.

Through intensive, 6-week internships, students shadowed employees at LifeScan, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, and conducted scientific research with faculty at San Jose State, California State, East Bay and Santa Clara Universities as they gathered soft-skills, hands-on lab skills, computer knowledge, and career awareness in the health, science and biotechnology industries.

In addition to the company-based internship, BTE students met throughout the summer at San Jose State University to network with their peers and learn more about applying to college.

Impact

  • 62 internships provided
  • 97 percent of interns say they intend to enroll in a four-year college after graduation.
  • 94 percent of interns believe the program has prepared them for their career goals after high school and will give them an edge when they apply to college or search for a job.
